What is the
council doing?
-
The City
Council and the University of Durham have deliberately allowed
this area to become run down since 2001 (although they have
been maintaining it until as recently as last summer) then
used this fact to argue for its development.
-
The City
Council did not consult with local people about possible uses
for Racecourse Park (the former bowling green) before they
included it in the development brief for the Elvet Waterside
development.
-
The City
Council has said that it does not require the capital from the
sale of Racecourse Park (former bowling green) to complete the
new swimming pool (and has also contradicted itself and says
it does).
-
By enabling
development on the Riverbanks in Durham City the City Council
are setting a precedent for other developers who may wish to
develop further areas along the riverbank including the Hild
and Bede College site should this ever be vacated by the
University, which has been mooted in a Durham City Council
Local Development Plan Document.

Loss of
University Playing Fields at Maiden Castle
To mitigate the
inevitable flooding by building unneeded luxury housing on
the greenfield site at Elvet Waterside, the developers are going to
cut back the bank of the River Wear at Maiden Castle abutting
Durham University’s playing fields at the Graham Sports Centre
which will result in a substantial loss of the University playing
fields. See photo.
