What do we want?
To retain the public greenfield sites of Racecourse Park (formerly bowling green) and the green triangle of land behind it for daily recreational enjoyment, by restoring Racecourse Park as a park, with areas for picnics, ball games and a children’s play area.
- The park to reflect Durham’s Heritage and be named a Miners Gala Memorial Park.
- The park to become part of the proposed Necklace Park which is from the 20/20 Vision for the City of Durham and which the Local Development Framework Planning for the City Centre and Retail describes as; ” An initiative which aims to encourage public access, engagement and enjoyment of the River Wear and adjacent land, at the same time as making physical and cultural connections between Durham City and the surrounding communities“.
- To enhance the area as a setting for Durham Regatta and the Miners Gala, to attract more visitors to Durham City.
- To maintain the ancient views which are of great historical significance to and from the Cathedral Peninsula (World Heritage Site no 28) from both sides of the river and from the University Cricket Ground.
